In a world of buy more now, all the freaking time, sometimes it’s nice to have that one thing that is useful, functional, and beautiful, and somehow uniquely you.

My black Sseko Designs bucket tote is that for me. I love a good tote bag, peaking into my closet would easily tell you that, but the bag I go to again and again over the years is my black safari leather Bucket tote from Sseko Designs

I bought this bag in the summer of 2015, it’s 100% leather, huge, and incredibly versatile. It’s been on trips with me to Texas, California, Colorado, and Philadelphia. It can carry anything and everything and looks good doing it. Every time I carry this bag someone stops to ask me about it; from ‘where did I get it’ to ‘oh that bag is beautiful’!

Here’s what a few of my Sseko Sisters have to say about their Bucket Totes:

@letssupportwomentogether: It’s my favorite bag, so much so that I have it in three colors! It looks great with a few items to being stuffed full for travel. I especially love it for running errands and day trips. It easily fits over my shoulder, and despite my short frame and long arms and dragging it on many steps, my oldest Bucket Bag looks just as good as my first! I’m always getting compliments on I too.

@bravely.boldly.sseko: I love that my custom bucket bag holds EVERYTHING I need for work and then some! I use mine with the wool tote organizer so all of my things are easy to find!

@ssekocaitlin: It’s the ultimate Mary Poppins Bag! Perfect for grab and go and throwing in all the random things I might need. And it’s perfect for my Auntie lifestyle of carrying all the snacks, water, and clothes for the kiddos!

@sseko_mermom: I love to use this bag for work or running errands. I feel way more put together instead of carrying random store bags or even multiple bags (because others might not be as study). My bucket bag literally holds all my random needs beautifully!

This particular tote is unlined and features no closure, which is fine by me, perfect for stuffing it full when I travel. It does have a small zippered pocket on the inside good for your phone, keys, and headphones. When I travel with this bag I always top it with a scarf or a jacket to secure everything inside.

Since it’s leather it shows wear elegantly, I recommend treating your leather products regularly with a conditioner. I recently bought some and I was stunned how luxurious my bag looked afterwards. Take care of your leather pieces people, they will last you a lifetime. This bag has a good 4 years under its belt and its not fading. Because it is timeless I know I will have this for the rest of my life.

Here are a few of the Bucket Tote Styles from Sseko Designs:

Y’all know that our mission at Sseko Designs is to enable high potential, talented young women in Uganda to continue on to university. These young women work for Sseko in the nine-month gap between secondary school and university, saving part of their income for university. They receive life skills training, are paired with professional mentors and get valuable formal work experience. At the end of their term, Sseko matches their savings 300%. Every woman who has graduated from Sseko has gone on to pursue higher education and is on her way to making our world a more beautiful place. In 2019, Sseko will enable our 131st woman to attend university!

In addition to their university-bound team, Sseko hires full-time staff primarily from non-profit partners. These women come from all walks of life and face a challenging job market. Sseko is bridging the gap. By creating an environment of dignity, honor, and dedication, Sseko Designs provides the opportunity for women in East Africa to end the cycle of poverty and create a more equitable society.

In a world of fast-paced fashion, a good classic bag will last you years. Here are a few suggestions when shopping for a classic carry-all tote:

  1. Quality – look at the materials and how it is constructed, I prefer leather or cotton canvas
  2. Style – avoid trend-centric colors, or details. While for some a red tote is totally in their wheelhouse, I have discovered I am a black bag gal, elegant and goes with everything.
  3. Price – when you are buying a quality, well made bag it will not be on the clearance rack. Plan to make an investment, it will pay off in the long run! I scored my Bucket Tote during an end of the year sale, they don’t run many and getting one during the online sale was hectic but it has paid for it’s self 10x over.

I recommend buying a bag that has everything you want, so if it helps make a list and take it with you when you shop or when looking online. Looking to add a Sseko Bucket tote to your repertoire? Let me know, if you don’t see a color or style you love we have a program that lets you create your dream custom tote!
