I jumped on the journaling bible bandwagon in 2010, when it was more of a Radio Flyer Wagon for one or two. Since then bible journaling has become an insanely popular phenomenon. Not everyone loves the idea of coloring, painting or writing in their bible, for some it’s terrifying and they have a perfectionism complex about it and for others it distracts from the rest of the text. The later is my husband and the former was myself, and still is in some ways.
Enter the Beautiful Word Bible, a NIV journaling bible from zondervan with 500 illustrated verses in full color. With room in the margins for additional notes, illustrations and prayers.
This bible comes complete with a beautiful dustcover that when removed showcases beautiful lettering and verse Proverbs 3: 5-6 for practical everyday use. While this bible is beautiful and so fun, I am not over the moon that it is the NIV translation- I’m an ESV girl myself.
Some of the illustrated verses felt very stock in their presentation, with little regard to the surrounding text. Of course all the ‘popular’ verses are illustrated; you know the ones that appear on cards and gifts.
My last negative for this bible is the paper, my ESV bible has a textural paper perfect for writing on, and for others perfect to paint on. The paper used in this bible is very smooth, be sure to use a ball point pen and watch for smudging as I think this could be an issue for some users.
Overall, this is a great bible for someone who is inspired by journaling bible but is afraid to take the leap. It provides inspiring lettering and drawings and room for them to explore their talent on their own.
