Advent 2015- Jingle Bells + Hope

This year for advent I want to share some of my favorite advent songs in relationship to the themes of advent.

advent 2015

This first song is not very adventy, it’s Jingle Bells. Ok, I know it is a strange way to begin advent but since it is the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, it seems a Thanksgiving song is somewhat appropriate.

I won’t get into the specifics or history of the song more than to say this. Jingle Bells is a festive song to keep out the winter chill with a bit of cheer. Back before heaters and modern conveniences, songs like Jingle Bells where sung with family and friends as they attended holiday festivities or walked to the local market staying cheerful during the cold dark winter was hard. Jingle Bells is a song of fun and living hope.

This year may we see the hope all around us, it seems at times the world is falling apart. Be hope to someone, who needs the hope that Jesus offers. The best way to offer hope is to be present and understand the needs of those around us especially those unspoken needs. One way to offer hope this season is to support the refugee resettlement here in the US, these victims and families are fleeing for their lives from the terrorism of Daesh or ISIS. The same way Jesus’ family sought a place to lay their heads in Bethlehem, the same way they fled Israel to Egypt for refuge from Herod.

You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. – Leviticus 19:34

How are you living the HOPE of Christ this advent season?
