Merrick + Honest Kitchen Dog Food

Yesterday was #foodfriday over on the Shelby Clarke Photo Facebook page, I thought I would extend our 1st Food Friday to today and explain why these 2 commercially made foods are so great for Asher, as well as what I add to them for more health benefits and yumminess for my favorite pup!

1) Merrick Grain Free Salmon Dog Food

Asher has been on Merrick since he was about a year old, we started on Diamond puppy but he became very itchy, and our vet recommended Purina One because of all the ‘scientific’ background of the food. Yeah, asher didn’t eat it. And honestly I began to look at his dog food the way I look at mine, if it’s not real food if it’s substance with vitamins and minerals added to it like astronaut food, wouldn’t it be better to eat the real thing vs the ‘scientifically’ made and ‘proven’? For example what is better Orange Juice or Tang? The 1st 5 ingredients are real food: Deboned Salmon, Salmon Meal, Sweet Potatoes, Peas, Potatoes, Whitefish Meal. I love all that fish because it’s full of Vitamin E and great for his skin and coat.

Another reason I like Merrick is they source their ingredients from America, so for those of you only buying made in America, this is good for the economy and your dog. Another plus is they are based in Texas, as a born and raised Texan, that makes it the Bees-Knees!

2) The Honest Kitchen Keen

I prefer Keen but in all honesty, Asher would probably eat every flavor. I tend to gravitate towards this ‘flavor’ as it doesn’t include chicken or beef, which I steer clear off for all my pets. I use this mostly as a topper, it is a bit expensive and it’s really good for him but in all honesty I cannot afford to fed this to him all the time. I tend to add Tumeric, Honey and Coconut Oil for their added benefits. Plus, I can’t open the coconut oil jar at my house without giving asher a spoonful, it’s a special treat for him.

3) Bonus yummies

Tumeric Spice
  • Tumeric- I have known about the benefits of Tumeric for myself for sometime and regularly include it our regular diet. Then I decided to see if those same benefits were the same for Asher, and they are very close. Tumeric is an amazing Anti Inflammatory, which is great for active dogs like Asher. It can help thin the blood and reduce the risk of blood clots in older dogs. Tumeric helps the liver metabolize fats and remove waste from the body. And that’s not everything. It’s a wonder spice for you and your dog. (Source)
Raw, Local Honey
  • Honey- the primary use for honey like for people is to reduce allergies. Asher has been an itchy pup since I brought him home and through the use of good food and local, raw honey he has adjusted well to everywhere we have been and lived. Now there are additional benefits to honey like, wound dressing, energy and digestive health. (Source)
Coconut Oil
  • Coconut Oil- this is another amazing food product that helps heal and promote healing by being ingested or applied topically, although applying topically on Asher is nearly impossible as he LOVES coconut oil so much. Basically, coconut oil has 3 major advantages; Skin, Digestion and Immune Support. Another thing I do it warm up about 1/4 cup of water and 2 Tablespoons of Coconut oil and Honey for maybe 10 seconds on half power or with warm water from the teapot. It’s important that the water is just warm and not too hot as it will break down valuable nutrients in the oil and honey, also if it’s too hot then it may burn your dog’s mouth. (Source)
